The Gazette for Equity in Medicine, also known as G.E.M., is an opportunity for creative writing by both providers and patients. It allows the reader to review, recognize, and interpret information relevant to the patient and centers their experience in a respectful and clinically significant manner.
The G.E.M. is a new online Narrative Medicine social media blog created by Dr. Dennar that focuses on social medicine and the health of Black, Brown, and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC). It integrates both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of social science with the biopsychosocial aspects of medical science by utilizing patients, students, and providers’ narratives in medicine to promote education and healing. It is an opportunity to voice the unspoken elements that govern our medical institutions and affect quality care and health outcomes. It centers the experiences of the BIPOC community to bring awareness of the inequities in medicine and healing by illuminating our authentic voices to encourage mindfulness and self-preservation.
